Hardware and software

This module provides an opportunity for students to work as part of a collaborative team to manage and complete a substantial project for a given scenario. Students are expected to utilise and extend the knowledge and understanding imparted previously and contextualise the material already covered. This module explores the architectures, components and operations of routers and switches in large scale, complex networks. Wide Area Network technologies and network services and converged applications are considered.

For full-time courses, the precise timetable for each semester is not confirmed until near the start date and may be subject to change in the early weeks as all courses settle into their planned patterns. For part-time courses which require attendance on particular days and times, an expectation of the days of attendance will often be included in the letter of offer. This module is intended to equip students with the core knowledge of ‘how hardware works’ in digital systems and introduce the concept of embedded systems using examples/case studies. The module covers introduction to embedded systems, number systems, boolean algebra, logic gates, logic expressions, combinational logic, A/D and D/A converters, computer systems and architectures. The content is delivered as a combination of lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions that provide students with a fundamental understanding of embedded systems and their applications.

Pathway programme for international students

For a long time, hard disk drives were the most common form of storage on personal computers, but solid-state drives have recently become very popular, particularly in laptops. Of course, we also want to have storage to store all our software & files when they’re not in use. Storage devices are not connected directly on the motherboard, but a data cable will run between the motherboard & storage devices. Advanced cyberinfrastructure

You will be assessed by a combination of exams and tests, coursework and practical work. Various concepts related to space environment are explored including, sun, solar wind, solar cycles, heliosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere, magnetic storms, substorms and geomagnetic indices. The module explains space weather phenomena and concepts including the effects of ionising radiation, cosmic rays, and solar energetic particle events on spacecraft systems and astronauts. The module considers ground induced current and its effect on the pipelines, power grid and transformers.
