Key areas of focus are the history of architecture, sculpture, painting, miniatures, the sumptuary arts, graphics, photography, and all forms of expression of the visible arts from the Middle Ages to the current day; different areas of focus embody the expressive intent and practice of performing arts from theatre to cinema, musicology and ethnomusicology. Although the collection’s emphasis has been on the art of western Europe and Byzantium, now we have recently added significant holdings from Coptic Egypt, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Syria, Armenia, and the Near East, encompassing both religious and secular imagery, together with Jewish and Islamic works. Sedlmayr, specifically, rejected the minute research of iconography, patronage, and different approaches grounded in historical context, preferring as a substitute to concentrate on the aesthetic qualities of a work of art.
